Outside Plant Installer (4 days)

Training Code: TR-OSP

Objectives

Fiber optic Outside Plant Installer training is designed with special emphasis on outside plant applications and standards.

TR-OSP students are expected to obtain knowledge of fiber optic concepts that will allow them to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to:

  • Configure, install, and maintain fiber optic systems specific to outside plant applications.
  • Become familiar with hands-on skills including:
    • Building up and splicing into a splice closure
    • Building a fan-out kit and a break-out kit
    • Measuring bi-directional loss and return loss for a mechanical splice per TIA/EIA 758.
    • Measuring bi-directional splice loss for a fusion splice per TIA/EIA 758
    • Single fusion splicing and ribbon fusion splicing.
    • Preparing splice closurers for mid-span entry
    • Understanding optical loss test set basics
    • Building a system, and testing and documenting the results

Summary

The fiber optic Outside Plant Installer course is similar to the Certified Fiber Installer (TR-CFI) course in that it is designed for workers with fundamental fiber optic knowledge but it differs in that it focuses specifically on outside plant installations (OSP). OSP includes communications such as building to building or long haul telecommunications (including customer-owned OSP.)

Emphasis is on single mode fiber optic installation and the associated international standards, theory, and practices. This specialized course is a must for any OSP professional. This course also includes an overview of FTTx ("Fiber to the x") applications (but there is another course specifically for FTTx specialists - TR-FTTX.)

Course Type

This course is currently offered with a self-paced, online lecture and a hands-on workshop. This innovative approach to fiber optic training and certification allows students to minimize expense, time and travel while learning at their own pace, on their own schedule (using online e-Learning to complete the lecture portion of the class.) Students may then complete the hands-on portions of the class at any of our scheduled sessions around the world (and can continue to review the material within one year of registering for the course.) If online training is not ideal for your learning style, a more traditional instructor-lead lecture or question and answer section is available upon request depending upon the location and the size of the class. For more information on our e-Learning program please check our “Online + Workshop” page. ↑ Top

Target Audience

This course is recommended for workers who will primarily be installing fiber outside of structures (building to building or long-haul.) Since the inside plant and outside plant techniques differ substantially, this course can be seen as the outside version of the Fiber Optic Installer course.

Candidates for this course don't have to have any knowledge or experience in the following areas, but it may be useful:

  • Fiber Optic Advantages and Applications
  • Cable
  • Connectors and Terminations
  • Enclosures and Panels
  • Test Equipment

Benefits

This course gives students a practical understanding of fiber optic technology and the skills needed to install, test, and maintain fiber optic cabling systems. They will also practice using outside plant techniques for building to building and long-haul installations. Students will learn connectorization, splicing, and testing in two full days of hands-on labs and live demonstrations.
